How to Pick a Present for That Hard-to-Buy-for Person

December 21, 2010

EtsyHave you ever agonized over what to get that hard-to-buy-for person, only to get it wrong—again? Worry no more. Brooklyn e-tailer Etsy will mine your Facebook friends’ likes to determine the perfect (Etsy-offered) gifts for them. Etsy’s mission is “to enable people to make a living making things, and to reconnect makers with buyers.” Zengage tried out the service, and found most of the suggestions reasonable, if not inspired. For a 14-year-old girl who likes softball, Harry Potter and Nike, the service suggested a softball charm necklace, Severus Snape earrings and a pair of vintage Nike sneakers, respectively. The service fell short, though, when suggesting a gift based on the 14-year-old’s affinity for the movie “The Notebook.” It suggested, well, notebooks.

We know. It's a lot to take in.
