About this app
Protocol Generator automatically creates unique, formatted protocol numbers and writes them directly into a custom ticket field — no manual work, no visible app panel.
Key features:• Fully configured at installation — prefix, suffix and digit count are set once during install• Invisible to agents — runs silently in the background, agents only see the protocol field filled• Customizable format — combine prefix, number and suffix to match your naming convention (e.g. BR83622437LCS)• Never overwrites — if the field already has a value, the app does nothing• No backend required — 100% ZAF native, no external servers or API tokens
How it works:The protocol number is generated and filled automatically when an agent opens a ticket with an empty protocol field. The value is saved the next time the agent takes any action on the ticket — such as submitting a reply, changing the status, or updating any field.
This means the typical workflow is: open the ticket, see the protocol already filled, take any action to save. For new tickets, the agent creates the ticket, opens it, and the protocol is ready to be saved on the next submit.
Data & Privacy:Protocol Generator does not collect, store, transmit, or share any customer data with external servers or third parties. All processing happens entirely within your Zendesk instance using the Zendesk App Framework (ZAF). No analytics, no tracking, no external API calls. How to install
Setup
- Go to Admin Center → Objects & Rules → Tickets → Fields
- Create a new Text field named "Protocol Number"
- Copy the numeric ID from the URL (e.g.
...fields/12345678/edit) - During app installation, fill in:
- Custom Field ID — the ID copied above
- Number of digits — how many random digits (default: 6)
- Prefix — optional text before the number (e.g.
